Brief
Takapu Road in Tawa — near William Earp Place and Takapu Road Station — carries high traffic volumes and speeds through complex roundabout movements, while pedestrian demand keeps rising from major residential growth (200-plus new lots) around the William Earp Place precinct. Wellington City Council needed a pedestrian crossing solution that was safe, defensible and deliverable.
What we did
TTAP took the project from concept through detailed design to issued-for-construction and Traffic Resolution. At concept stage we shortlisted options and ran an unweighted multi-criteria assessment against safety, cost and BCR, traffic efficiency, deliverability and community support — landing on a raised zebra crossing with kerb extensions as the preferred option. A scope variation then re-tested that option against updated development data (growth revised to 200-plus lots) and refreshed the economic case for the Community Board.
Detailed design covered the geometry of the raised platform, kerb extensions and tie-ins; pavement design for the approaches, platform and footpath; geotechnical and drainage design; a 3D and aquaplaning check; signing and marking; and an underground-services check — through to a 100% pack, IFC drawings, and the Traffic Resolution documentation.
Outcome
A safety upgrade designed to NZTA Traffic Control Devices and pedestrian-design guidance, evidenced through MCA and BCR, and packaged to meet Council’s Traffic Resolution cycle — with the preferred option defensible to the Community Board.
